SOOOO, I didn’t get started on any of those projects like I told you I would. Sometimes when I’m feeling particularly unmotivated, I think of my friend Karin and say to myself, “What would Karin Davies do?” (W.W.K.D.D). She does more in one day than the average person does in a month. She’s wonder woman. So when I have days like I had this weekend, I think, W.W.K.D.D. This means that this weekend, all those random things that I’ve put off, got done.
It wasn’t a particularly crafty weekend but I WAS able to hit a few yard sales. The first one was in ritzy Highland Park, and most of the furniture was marked in the $4,000 range. I considered the giraffe and lion pelts that the estate had to offer, but I ended up leaving the house feeling nauseous and depressed.
The second house. Wow. I have NEVER smelled an odor like that. Imagine an old musty tent…after a wildebeest had died in there. Good thing she had so many VHS cassettes on bondage, or I would have left much sooner. I re-checked the craigslist ad because I remember the ad saying there was “antique jewelry” (a.k.a old candy necklaces) and “designer clothing” (stained t-shirts. REALLY?!). Apparently other patrons thought it was gross because she had updated her ad with “Y’all please stop flagging my yard sale. Its la-jit.”
The last house we went to was adorable. I ended up buying some vintage leather gloves and a piece of costume jewelry. Each was $1. The gloves I can sell on eBay for $20 a pair. Not a great profit margin, but not bad for 3 minutes of work. Here’s where I get to the point of this story…
I got married 5 months ago. My beloved stylist friend, Florence, was not going to be able to make it to the wedding due to international travel (My mother told me to re-schedule the wedding. I’m not kidding). I guess no one believed that I’d be able to re-create the look she taught me. Hair, makeup, and accessories. Before you continue reading, go to her blog and just look at how stinkin’ cute she is. http://flopatch.blogspot.com/
Here’s a picture of me at our wedding (p.s. my hair looks a little flat here. Conveniently, I va-voomed it up AFTER pictures.
And another one that better shows my hair jewels
Florence instructed me on how to do this easy-peasy vintage wave look and then lent me some jewels to pin into my hair. They were clip on earrings, which she fashioned into a clip. The brooch I bought this weekend is much larger but I’m optimistic it will stay put. ONE DOLLAR!
Here’s what you do: One option is to use a few bobby pins and cross them in different directions as you pin them in your hair. Flo’s genius option was to permanently affix a bent bobby pin
I’ve found a few options on eBay for you to try this out. I’m excited to find things for you guys. I’m hoping it allows me to slow down on buying it all myself. If it’s sold out, it’s because one of you little darlings bought it!
- Valentine’s Heart brooch $4.99
- Small Double Row $8.99
- Honey multi colored, straight from Intercourse, Pennsylvania $9.99 —a favorite
- Crescent half moon (FAVORITE) $9.85
- Flower branch $6 obo
- This one would be really beautiful as an actual brooch or waist ornament $10.99
Lastly, if the hair bedazzlement doesn’t work out, you can just wear the brooch AS IS! If you feel like it ages you to wear a brooch for a night out on the town, start introducing yourself as “Blanche” or “Auntie” and it will all even out.
